Pros

Some really great designers. Diverse work, interesting projects- opportunity for social good- however unfortunately - on the whole lacking in skill/ talent to deliver quality products and solutions are often not led by customer needs.

Cons

An “OK is good enough” mentality is the norm. It’s essentially comprised of a group of people who’ve worked together in government for years / coupled with newcomers which creates an odd mishmash. There’s a true lack of diversity in problem-solving, ideas, life experiences and the work reflects this. Also, if you think differently from the majority, you’re seen as a threat (or outright wrong). The work culture is unstimulating, depressing, very political, unethical, not at all customer focused and ridiculously unproductive. Beaurocratic f**k ups, coverups, bumbling messes are the norm. Poor leadership, lack of support, outdated management styles and micromanagement stifle creativity and growth. Anyone who wants to explore their values, creative energy, and connections with fellow creatives this is definitely not the place for you. Take your talents elsewhere, its a wonderful thriving market out there, this place will leave you feeling unfulfilled and disconnected.

Pros

No Sundays and public holidays

Cons

Where do you start.. The incompetence you find at every level is embarrassing. Don’t expect to move forward in SNSW unless you buddy up to management. The bullying, intimidation and complete lack of care or interest for employees is unbelievable. CSRs & DSRs are treated like second class citizens. They place zero value on their staff. Instead of internally promoting staff, incompetent individuals get pushed to the top of the ladder because they know / buddy up to management. The staff at some centres are so unhappy it’s palpable.

Pros

The organisation is not perfect but it’s in an amazing transformational course. Loads of legacy systems and people, but a new dawn of a dynamic, lean and agile way of working is being rolled out. The leadership sometimes seen as detached and a tad clueless is committed to a larger vision and is putting the foundations in place for an amazing service delivery powerhouse. This is government with a start up feeling!

Cons

By being part of the government and under the wings of politicians, Service NSW suffers from time to time with the chaotic and random nature of our political parties. That appointee or minister can change the entire agenda or landscape one day to another. It may make your work life heaven or hell...depending on their “great” new idea. Brace yourself for constant and sometime incredibly hard to justify change.
