Pros

Since 2022, MH has invested heavily in building a world class Customer Success team for the higher education business. Lots of ongoing learning opportunities. Generally have good, kind, hardworking coworkers and bosses. Business goals are clear, and my values feel in alignment with the company. Love the work of designing and implementing digital courses with faculty. Despite any flaws, this is still the best company I’ve ever worked for.

Cons

CSRs wear too many hats and very uneven distribution of workloads amongst my team. It’s normal for one CSR to be responsible for $6 million ARR and 400+ courses across 20 different campuses while their direct teammates have half that workload yet earn the same. This would never happen at other tech companies without a clear difference in title and salary. The bigger your workload, the harder it is to attain sales goals because they are measured as % growth. Hire more people or give promotions & raises where they are due. Many of the old guard employees have never worked outside of textbook publishing, which gives them a very narrow idea of how the business should be run. This is the main reason MH took so long to evolve into a true edtech business model. Lots of wasted time chasing random metrics. Overuse of tracking 100 data points distracts from the end goal of keeping customers happy and growing the business $$. No CS career path to speak of.

Pros

Sometimes the work is interesting. Working from home. Many of the teams and some managers are good. Time off is decent and they are good about letting us take time off for family needs and emergencies.

Cons

Difficult work, low pay, zero job security, zero opportunities for advancement, long hours (you’re often expected to work far more than 40 hours a week). You’re paid a set salary so the company doesn’t pay you for extra hours such as evenings and weekends. Some ADs work seven days a week to get the heavy workload done. At-will employment means you can lose your job at any time for no reason. They often let people go after they’ve been dedicated employees for 10+ years, with no severance and no pension or benefits, simply because they “restructure” entire departments for no reason. My boss, who was beloved by many, was suddenly let go after nearly 30 years with the company. Pay is horribly low and despite the company making record profits, some years we don’t even get the measly yearly bonus. Hard work and dedication are never rewarded.

McGraw Hill could be great

Pros

The people and the product are the major strengths of McGraw Hill.

Cons

1. **Compensation and Market Standards**: The salary is outdated and doesn’t match the market value, putting the sales team at a disadvantage compared to competitors. 2. **Leadership Disconnect**: Upper management appears to be out of touch with the sales environment, failing to acknowledge the challenges the team faces, such as high quotas that don’t reflect the current educational market conditions. 3. **Lack of Advocacy**: There's a sense that no one is truly championing the sales team's needs and concerns. This, combined with the lack of sales-minded leadership, adds to the frustration. 4. **Unrealistic Expectations**: Despite poor numbers across most states, the company seems to ignore the broader issues, celebrating isolated successes while the majority of the team struggles to meet quotas. 5. **Employee Well-being**: Upper management doesn’t seem focused on ensuring the well-being or success of their employees, leading to a demotivating and unsupportive work environment.

Pros

Decent salary + good bonus sometimes.

Cons

If you’re good at what you do, you won’t get promoted to another job. All CS on a team make the same bonus even though some work much harder. The reward for being good at your job = more work.

Pros

They post salary ranges with every job. Benefits are great and include things like covering some of the costs of IVF, adoption, or gender-affirming care. Managers are good listeners and share feedback with those who can make changes. Then they make changes and seek more feedback for a healthy improvement cycle.

Cons

The company did VERY well two years in a row and more responsibilities have been added to our jobs, but compensation hasn't increased much. Every few months there's a new internal project that takes a considerable amount of time and the ROI isn't clear. I'm on my 3rd boss in less than 3 years. The first 2 are still there but their territories or roles shifted. All 3 have been great, but the turnover and adapting to new personalities, communication preferences, etc can take it's toll.
