…I want to change jobs or industries but I don’t want to take a cut in pay. I want to move to a different part of the country or even the world. I want to improve my circumstances, but I don’t want it to be uncomfortable. Sound familiar? The perfect job with the perfect salary doesn’t exist. But follow these five steps to get yourself well on the road to a new and exciting opportunity without taking a massive cut in pay in 2018:
  1. Start rebuilding your CV. Done right, this process will take weeks, maybe even a month or two, but start phase one today. Search online for a resource on CV writing. Or, hire a CV professional to strategise as your career agent. Yes, they do exist!
  2. Immediately start applying for jobs. If you feel stuck in toxicity at work, then do something that feels tangible. For example, if you want a job at a specific company, send a CV there. Even getting a rejection letter (or in some cases, no response) is better than doing nothing. In other words, the energy vibe you will feel – the palpable traction – will be invigorating mentally, emotionally and even physically. The action of applying is empowering and proactive.
  3. Determine what additional education or training you may need. First, you must determine if the role you seek is one that you currently qualify for or whether it requires additional training, education and/or experience that ultimately will lead you to the end goal. If additional education is required, then you must be realistic about the outcome of that education will result in a new career or job. Don’t invest in further education just for the sake of it.
  1. Begin reducing your expense overhead. There are always  hidden life expenses and bills you can trim to create a leaner lifestyle. For example, are you spending £250 + per month on TV subscriptions and gym memberships? Do you really need Netflix? Cancel it. Liberate yourself from the grip of certain monthly payments (at least for a short while with Netflix!) and only spend money as and when you need it. Rent movies online when you want to watch them. Go on bootcamps in local parks or sign  up to Goodgym to keep fit and boost your sense of ‘zenergy’.
  2. Check out what is fair pay for your role by using Glassdoor. If you want to identify what you should be earning, or, what kind of money you could me making if you decide to change career, make sure you do your research and use Glassdoor. The more information you have, the stronger your case will be.
Making a career transition requires give and take, patience and determination. Stop being that person that’s unhappy but doesn’t take any action. Be proactive, and you’ll begin reaping the benefits leading to a lifestyle in sync with your personal preferences as we ring in the new year.
