For many of us the New Year can bring many changes, New Year resolutions get made, some are kept and some are not. Sometimes it’s imperative to make a change because if nothing is done, health, wellbeing, mind and relationships can all suffer. Working in the wrong job can cause you to suffer, especially if the job goes against your values and ethics, it’s like trying to force a square peg into a round hole, it can’t be done. Have you felt unhappy at work for a while now? Will the new Year be the perfect excuse for you to change? Consider a New Year career change if: Job alerts are the 1st thing you check in the morning Don’t worry you’re not the only one, a whopping 62% of people check jobs vacancies before they even get out of bed. Sometimes it's because people like to check their worth, it’s easier to negotiate a pay rise when you know what the competitors are paying. However, if you’re someone who is looking at jobs because the thought of going to work is making you want to hide under the covers all day, then you should take note. How can you be productive if you don’t want to go there and what is it doing to your wellbeing? Sometimes you have to face the truth and do something about it, remember we spend a huge chunk of our lives at work; we owe it to ourselves to want to go there. You avoid your work colleagues If you find yourself hiding whenever you see a work colleague on your travels, ask yourself why? Is it because you don’t want to talk shop on your day off? Perhaps you don’t like your work colleagues; you have nothing in common with them, and you definitely can’t be socialising with them after work! Sometimes employers and recruiters hire wrong, and it could be that you don’t fit the company culture or the type of employees it attracts. A good employer will always put hiring for culture as a priority; they know that happy employees who work well together and like each other are going to be more productive. You can’t abide their ethics If you’re a person who cannot abide waste, but the company you work for wastes too much, or perhaps you’ve found out that they've invested in something you’re completely against or that their European arm has some shocking practices going on. Whatever it is you're not comfortable with it, you believe isn’t ethical. When ethics or values go completely against yours, then the whole situation can become very uncomfortable, and it’s probably time to move on. They've broken their promise   When you started in the job you were promised great training, but it turned out to be poor. There was a promise of a quick career progression, but you’re still waiting for your career to take off. Once a company or an individual promises you something, but they don’t deliver on that promise respect goes, it’s very hard to get that respect back. When we don’t respect someone we don’t give them our very best. Respect should be two-way; we should respect them & they should respect us. When promises are broken, trust breaks down, respect goes and perhaps you should go with it.
