You spend approximately one-third of your life at work, on average 40 hours a week, that averages out at 25 -30 years! That’s a lot of time at work isn’t it, especially when you don’t like the work that you do or where you do it.   If this is you and you’ve had enough of doing a job you don’t love here are some things you can do to make sure you find a job that makes your heart sing. Make a “Hate” list This sounds rather negative, but you needn't worry it will used positively. Write down everything you hate about your current job, lay it out in bullet points, so it’s easy to read. It might look something like this: I hate The commute The location The lack of training The monotony The hierarchy Going forward your list will help you because you will know what you don’t like and what your dream job needs to deliver. Eliminate the money Another pen and paper exercise, this time though you need to write down all the jobs you’d love to do even if you never got paid to do them. This exercise is an eye opener, if you find yourself writing down jobs like dog groomer or chef when you’re an accountant, it’s no wonder your heart doesn’t sing when you go to work each day. The job you’re currently doing is frustrating you, making you unhappy and could even end up being ill because you’re not in alignment. It’s up to you to choose happiness and fulfilment over money, once you make that decision, then you start looking at ways to make it happen, like courses or even going back to college. Volunteer Volunteering is always a good way to get your foot in the door to the job you want to do. You don’t even have to be in-between jobs to volunteer, just save up your holiday and do a voluntary role during that time. This is a good strategy to have if you’re a person who needs a safety net. Showing a company that you’re willing to work to gain experience goes a long way. When passion and determination show through, good things begin to happen. Blog Are you someone who knows what they want to do but doesn’t know how to make it happen? If that’s you then starting a blog could be a step in the right direction. It might be that you’re passionate about something but you consider to be just a hobby, that’s one of the reasons why you currently work where you do, it’s to pay for your hobby. Your family have told you that you’ll never earn money doing your hobby, but here’s the thing, your hobby is what makes you bounce out of bed in the morning. Why shouldn’t you earn money from doing your hobby, other people have managed to earn money from theirs, and remember it’s not always just about how much money you earn. Start by regularly blogging about your hobby; you’ll be surprised at how quickly you get a following and how by putting your thoughts out there can attract opportunities, which could lead you to a job you love. Job Vision Board You can do this the old fashioned way by getting a cork board pin board, or you can set up a job vision board online, use sites such as Pinterest or Padlet, to name a couple. Whatever pin board you opt for the process is the same, pictures are pinned to the board to manifest what you visualise. Your job vision board should have pictures of locations, happy employees, company car, training days; industry related pics, even a picture of the workstation you’d prefer! Whatever you think would be relevant to your dream job should be pinned onto the board. Visualisation can be a good way to drive you closer to your job goal.
