Thank you for leaving your honest feedback about the process. I do remember this and would like to explain what happened here. Firstly, you did very well progressing past the technical test and interview stage as we don’t have a lot of candidates that are good enough to progress to the final round.
I was going away on holiday the day afterwards for 2 weeks and wanted to make sure you weren’t waiting for my return to schedule a final round and leave you in limbo. This is why I asked the agent if you would be willing to do a final interview so soon after the technical one. I thought they had explained this and I never meant to pressure you into this. I would have been ok to wait. I also wanted to make sure we could make a decision quickly if the interview went well.
I don’t remember the Glassdoor question but I try to be transparent with candidates that ask about the negative reviews, owning that many of the issues came from being in a fast growth business and things have improved significantly now. We aren’t perfect but we do try improve wherever we can. I quite like these questions because we want people to work in a great environment and its important to go over how the team works now and what candidates can get out of the role. I don’t remember any questions you asked being negative.
The reason I couldn’t provide you with a more timely response was that we had another candidate who we were deciding on who we ultimately made an offer to and I was away on holiday at the time. I wanted to see a few more candidates before making a decision and mentioned this to the agent. When candidates clearly stand out in the interview we make a decision within a day but when there are other good candidates that have applied and it’s a close call I feel its fair to give those other candidates a chance before making a final decision. If the interview didn’t go well however we would have let you know straight away.
I’m actually the Head of Engineering and still enjoy being hands on where I can. If I wasn’t I don’t feel I would be able to make good technical decisions.
I do hope you have found a good role and I apologise I made you feel this way. Given the high bar we have for people coming into the team, and you just missing out, I think that shows how good of an engineer you are, certainly better than most in Sydney.
