1. Applied online through the ANZ careers website and later that same day received an email inviting me to move through to the next stage of the recruitment process.
2. The second stage was completing online assessments and systems simulations, which mainly tested typing speed, accuracy, and how well you can navigate different systems.
3. After completing that, I was invited to do a video interview where I was asked multiple STAR-based questions. I’d definitely recommend preparing examples beforehand around customer service, teamwork, problem solving, and handling difficult situations.
4. The next stage was a face-to-face interview held within one of ANZ’s corporate offices, as the position was an office-based corporate role. During the interview, I was asked more STAR-based questions and also completed a customer service role play scenario to demonstrate how I would interact with customers in a professional corporate environment.
5. Within a week of the interview, I received a phone call offering me the role. From there, I had to complete references and background checks before officially starting. I ended up starting the role around 6 weeks after accepting the offer, and once starting, I completed 7 weeks of extensive training to ensure I was fully prepared and supported within the role.
Overall, the recruitment process was quite lengthy and took around 8 weeks from application to receiving an offer.
To anyone trying to get into banking, my biggest piece of advice is to just be yourself. Don’t be afraid to have a laugh and build a connection with the interviewers — you don’t need to be overly serious the entire time. Be curious, ask lots of questions, especially around training and development opportunities, and show genuine interest in learning.
I personally had no previous banking experience before starting the role, so don’t let that discourage you. Strong customer service skills, confidence, communication, empathy, and good people skills are what will really help you succeed in these types of roles. Banking can honestly open so many doors once you’re in the business, and there are plenty of opportunities to grow and move into different areas within the company over time.
