In a world of 24/7 technology where we are always expected to be available, it can be all too easy for organisations to drop into the expectation of people being available for calls and answering emails at all times of the day and night. It can be particularly difficult in global organisations. Different time zones mean communications with colleagues in a variety of countries can add to the pressure of working different and often extended hours. Handling Pressure On a daily basis we all experience pressure. It is when we exceed our personal capacity to cope that we can go down the slippery slope of stress. Pressure can be motivating. Short bursts can increase our drive and determination to succeed. When it gets too much however, it can lower productivity and increase sickness absence and turnover rates. The best way to avoid that is to get the basics right so everyone can thrive. The right culture Having clear boundaries around working hours and a culture where employees are not expected to be available late into the evening will enable staff to switch off fully in their personal time. When organisations get their culture right, take the wellbeing of their staff seriously and actively encourage people to keep a healthy balance, they can deal with whatever comes their way and stay clear of the stress zone. Leadership Organisational culture is underpinned by great leadership. Managers need key skills to maximise their own, and others peoples’ performance:
  • Delegation of tasks with clear expectations allows for a fair distribution of work. Many managers when promoted can struggle to let go of tasks so make sure they have the skills to do so.
  • Develop staff so they have the skills to effectively perform in their role.
  • Effective goal setting and regular reviews will ensure all are clear on what they are doing and how their contribution supports the team and the overall business strategy.
  • Communication and the art of giving effective feedback can enable people to develop, learn from mistakes and have clear strategies and skills for moving forward. Listen to staff, encourage and praise.
  • Encourage creativity and suggestions for improvements.
  • Manage meeting time and make them effective. Far too much time is wasted in meetings with no clear agenda, outcomes or actions, or even having a room full of people that don’t need to be there!
Work Life Balance Getting the balance right can be difficult. It certainly isn’t about having a 50:50 split in time and what is the right balance for one person won’t be the same for someone else. As an organisation, encourage staff to build resilience and find their personal balance:
  • Get the basics right with time management skills and the knowledge they need to do their job effectively.
  • Encourage and provide for healthy food options in staff canteens.
  • Educate with workshops on health and wellbeing topics.
  • Provide discounts for gym memberships and other such exercise and social activities.
  • Introduce lunch time sessions for things such as yoga and massage that will boost energy levels and also relaxation.
When you get your culture right and underpin it with the right policies and leadership your employees can thrive. And that is also right environment for organisations to flourish and thrive too.
