Helping Hands, the family owned and run company, wants to let everyone known they are being valued. By the looks of it, it has also managed to make their employees feel very special given that the organisation has just been named a Best Place To Work 2018 in the UK, the only home care company on the list this year. Here we speak to Karen Rayfield , HR Director at Helping Hands to find out why working for them is so rewarding.
How do you help build a great company culture?
Appreciating people for the work that they do and letting them know that they are valued goes a long way to creating a great company culture. At Helping Hands the work that we do in keeping vulnerable people at home with the people and things that they love around them is extremely meaningful work. By making sure that each individual within the business understands the importance of their role in this is very important to us.
What do you do to foster employee trust and engagement?
We have a clear set of company values at Helping Hands and it is important to us that every single person in our team lives them out day to day. From the CEO down we know how essential it is that we walk the walk.
Being honest with our teams and keeping them updated on what is going on across the company also helps to build trust. Sometimes things go wrong and when that happens it is important that we apologise to whichever team member it affects and work as hard as we can to put it right super quick!
Your employees love working here as we see the strong rating on Glassdoor - How do you make this a great place to work day in and day out?
Giving our employees a voice and showing that we are listening to them is really important. We run a companywide employee survey at least every six months and measure the progress that we are making against the areas that matter to our staff. In addition to this each and every member of the team has a monthly 1-2-1 meeting with their line manager and we have regular team meetings to make sure that we are recognising and rewarding success, sharing ideas and communicating how we are doing. We also like to have fun and hold a number of regular social events from a team curry night to our annual awards ceremony and party.
What is the best part about working here?
Our Carers and Customers. What we do at Helping Hands changes lives for the better, which is priceless.
What do you look for in informed candidates?
At Helping Hands it is all about having the ability to care and put other people before yourself. We can train people to do the rest.
How do you retain talent - what are some of your best practices?
Making a big song and dance about what our people do well and for the contribution that they make. In care we deliver a person centred approach to looking after our customers, which puts their wants and needs front and centre of everything we do. Taking the same approach with our staff is a winning approach to retaining the amazing talent that we have in our business
How do you recruit the best talent?
By never compromising on what good looks like at Helping Hands.
