There is an extremely high probability that a tech device you own, such as a smartphone, tablet or computer, will be powered by a silicon chip from the clever people at ARM. Cool aye? In fact, their technology reaches 80% of the global population.
The impressive stats don’t stop there. They are also one of the UK’s best places to work according to Glassdoor (#2 in 2017 and #7 in 2016). At the time of writing, employees have given ARM an overall Glassdoor score of 4.1/5 with 94% approving of the current CEO Simon Segars.
We wanted to dive a bit deeper into what makes ARM tick, and caught up with their Senior Director of Global Talent Acquisition, Yvonne Erlandsson, to find out more.
What does a Global Talent Acquisition Director do? It's all about recruitment right?
Talent Acquisition plays a much broader role within ARM then perhaps more traditional recruitment models. We are the experts in understanding the key sources of talent needed for our businesses today and for tomorrow.
Through effective talent market insight we actively influence and support the business with strategic decisions such as creating a diverse workforce, building our location strategy and looking to see how we attract and retain five generations at work. Through these activities together with building attractive early career programs we are architecting the business for the future. For example here at ARM we are driving towards a 21.5% gender diversity target and we play a key part in driving this through our attraction and hiring process ensuring it’s inclusive and bias free.
Another important role that Talent Acquisition plays today is in driving the employee experience journey. This journey isn’t just about attracting the right candidates to work for ARM. It’s about displaying ARM’s culture and what it’s like to work here at ARM through a seamless candidate experience and then creating and evolving an extraordinary employee experience upon joining us at ARM.
With so much new technology emerging in the market it is imperative to digitalise making it easier for talent to engage and apply as well as enable the business to make good hiring decisions.
How do you build the best teams when you're working in a global organisation?
Apart from hiring progressive talent into ARM, we help them to evolve through thought leadership with clear accountability and autonomy in their job. We invest in individual development and provide an inclusive environment where people feel safe to express their opinion. We harness the different regional cultures as a way to innovate and progress creating a place where our people can grow along with the organisation and be able to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
How do you use Glassdoor to shape your employer brand but also attract the very best talent to ARM?
Glassdoor is a great platform to showcase who you are and what you stand for. Glassdoor gives a window into the world of ARM through our employees’ eyes – both the good and the bad. Glassdoor not only gives job hunters a true view of what it is like to work at ARM, building up a picture of our culture through their shared experiences, our interview process and salaries. It is also holds us accountable that we are practicing what we are telling the right story and lets us know our flaws so we can continuously create a ‘best place to work’. Glassdoor allows us to continuously create a true and authentic employer brand based on the stories of our people.
What's the one thing you always want to know about a candidate at interview?
ARM has three core beliefs representing the essence of our culture and therefore we look for characteristics of these beliefs in every candidate ensuring we bring people into the business that are not just able to do the role advertised, but are going to thrive and succeed in our organization. This is looking beyond the skills and experience required for the role and considering the capabilities, including working preferences and behaviors.
Our Core Beliefs are:
We, not I, Passion for progress, Be your brilliant self
Tell me a little bit about the future of HR and how you believe it will shape the work you do at ARM?
There are a number of trends changing the world in which we live. These same trends have the potential for a domino effect on how we can expect to experience work in the future. At ARM, we are currently looking at a number of trends in our 2020 project ranging from Artificial intelligence to Next Gen. One of our focuses next year will be taking a more human centred design approach to our people strategy and looking at the employee experience as an end to end journey, the same way marketers look at providing an outstanding customer experience. Employee experience for ARM is around creating a workplace where people want to ‘work’ and ‘be’ – connecting and embracing both the physical and the emotional as the world between work and personal life continues to blur.
