Whatever level you’re at in your career we’ve all had to start somewhere. So, we reached out to Glassdoor’s Highest Rated UK CEOs 2017*, to discover exactly how these high performing Chief Executives made it to the very top. And, it seems that even some of the most successful people in the country started at the bottom. Hope for us all!
CEO: Peter Simpson (#1 in 2017) Company: Anglian Water Glassdoor Approval Rating: 98 percent First job: “I was a groundsman on a golf course near to my family home. My first job with Anglian Water was as an Analytical Chemist in our laboratory. I still have a passion for my craft as a scientist, and I am pleased to have worked in so many roles within the company.” CEO: Martin Bennett (#3 in 2017) Glassdoor Approval Rating: 96 percent Company: HomeServe First Job: “My very first job was in a food factory, I was a packer on the end of a production line. Cash was king and they still sold leaded and unleaded gas!” CEO: Ian McCaig (#16 in 2017) Glassdoor Approval Rating: 94 percent Company: First Utility First Job: “Well, I did a lot of farm labouring in my teens, but my first job out of university was as a software engineer - something I was deeply mediocre at.” CEO: Henry Birch (#14 in 2017) Glassdoor Approval Rating: 94 percent Company: The Rank Group First Job: “My first full time job was working as a researcher for David Steel in the House of Commons. Before that I had the normal working in a shop/ building site/ waiter type jobs as a teenager and student.” CEO: Steve Ingham (#7 in 2017) Glassdoor Approval Rating: 95 percent Company: PageGroup First Job: “I started doing jobs for my father, on his caravan site, when I was 11 years old. Then a succession of summer jobs ranged from teaching sailing and windsurfing in the USA to working in an open cast coal mine in Derbyshire, driving an earth-moving truck which had wheels bigger than me! My first ‘real’ job though was working as a metallurgist at Johnson Matthey, for 4 years, after I finished university.” CEO: Andy Bruce (#12 in 2017) Glassdoor Approval Rating: 94 percent Company: Lookers First Job: “My first “real” job was a graduate trainee at Land Rover as the assistant to the UK Sales Director. Little could I have imagined then that I’d go on to hold that role later in my career!”*Employees’ Choice Award winners for the 2017 Highest Rated CEOs are determined using Glassdoor’s proprietary algorithm, taking into account the quantity, quality and consistency of Glassdoor-approved company reviews shared by UK-based employees between 2 May, 2016 and 1 May, 2017. At a minimum, employers considered for the list must have received at least 30 company reviews, including at least 30 CEO approval ratings and at least 30 senior management ratings during the eligibility period. For reporting simplicity, CEO approval ratings are displayed as whole numbers, though calculations extend beyond the thousandth place to determine final rank order.
