Strong and stable, where have we heard that before? It’s all well and good shouting it out from a plinth but what if others don’t believe the message, what if they think their leader is anything but strong and stable. Leadership commands respect; it’s about providing a solid foundation for everyone to build upon, good leaders have a vision, they encourage others to turn that vision into a reality. A good leader creates an environment where success thrives; they understand the needs and desires of their customers, as well as their employees.
In business a strong leader oozes confidence which becomes infectious throughout the whole organisation, giving it energy and direction.
Leaders can come in many forms but in business, it’s the CEO who sets the strategy, and it’s the CEO who is responsible for the success of the business.
The CEO has a powerful title but that doesn’t mean they’ll automatically be competent, there’s a lot involved in being a CEO, and there are some who struggle.
Some CEO’s lack a big enough vision, some become arrogant, some stop listening and learning, which all leads to a downward spiral not just for them but the whole business.
It’s imperative that a company has a strong CEO.
A strong CEO should build a powerful senior management team, create a great company culture, form solid partnerships, make acquisitions, raise money, build a successful business with the money raised and delegate, they delegate a lot!
A strong CEO is:
A Risk-Taker
Logical, well-calculated risk taking is required, and it takes a special individual to make the decision whether to go for it or not. A strong CEO isn't risk-averse, they will, however, evaluate everything and make sure that the company is never jeopardised.
Motivational
The CEO must have the ability to motivate. They must be clear in communicating the vision as well as getting everyone enthusiastic about it. They will connect everyone to a common purpose; they’ll encourage them to believe in themselves, giving them the power to make it happen.
Controlled
A CEO should never break down in tears or storm out of the room in anger, slamming doors on their way. Being controlled doesn’t mean that a CEO is emotionless, they will applaud success as well as highlight any failures in a professional controlled manner.
Innovative
They know that innovation drives growth, that it’s crucial and without it, the business will fail. The CEO knows that ideas for products, services and solutions are just ideas if they’re not executed, it’s down to them to oversee it happens.
Inclusive
Even though the CEO will be the ultimate decision maker, they will include the management team in the process. A good CEO will encourage free thinking and utilise the minds of highly skilled people in the team; their input is crucial to the success of the business.
Entrusting
Working “on the business” means a CEO must entrust responsibilities to others. Micro managing is not acceptable, if that happens then, the CEO has hired the wrong management team. It doesn’t mean that CEOs must completely distance themselves, that’s going completely the other way which is also wrong. A good CEO achieves a happy balance, they delegate strategically and know when to check in to give feedback.
A strong CEO can take a company to the dizzy heights of success; a weak CEO can ruin a company, it's not a job for the faint-hearted.
