If you are looking for a promotion how do you set yourself apart from the competition? The people that do well and fly up the ranks develop key skills and habits that everyone can learn from. So start now and see your career flourish.
  1. Be organised
Planning your workload, prioritising and keeping to deadlines are fundamentals. Set targets and goals and agree them with your manager. Keep them informed on your progress with clear written updates or notes that you can present in meetings. Maximise your achievements, keeping a record and evidence of what you have done in preparation for your performance reviews and promotional interviews.
  1. Be a team player
Be collaborative and support your colleagues. Focusing on ‘I’ rather than ‘we’ and using others for self-gain will ultimately leave you disliked and isolated.  So work within the team whilst you excel at your own role. Be a helpful person that people can trust. Volunteer for extra or different work projects, gaining more experience but also boosting team performance. Be a role model that people can have confidence in.
  1. Have great communication skills
Great communication not only means expressing yourself clearly and respectfully but it also means being a good listener. You have two ears and one mouth for a reason! Listen more and understand other people’s viewpoints. Discuss work plans and ideas with your colleagues and find the right way to support the team so the organisation succeeds. Keep people informed so they know they can rely on you.
  1. Keep learning
As well as the skills that you need for your current role, look ahead and develop those things needed for your next role.  It may be that extra qualifications are needed or practical experience on different types of work. If your organisation has a behavioural competency framework, look at what the requirements are for your desired role compared to your current one. Then find ways to improve on and demonstrate your competencies. Do webinars, attend conferences, keep up to date with the latest developments in your chosen industry. You might need to pay for such things yourself but it is an investment in your future. Having enough mental stretch and creativity in your life plays a fundamental part for your positive mental health, so make sure you are using and exercising your brain!
  1. Look the part
How you show up for work makes a difference. Whatever profession you work in there will be an appropriate dress code and expectations on your conduct. Even with a dress down policy, make sure you look professional. Dress for the role that you want, not just what you have now. Obviously that doesn’t mean turning up for work dressed as Batman or you could find yourself on a disciplinary! The image that you portray matched with the right attitude, competencies, skills and experience will put you in demand. Be the best version of yourself, develop great habits and plan your way to the top! banner blog 14 Apply for jobs on Glassdoor here:
