Pros

Privilege working for a national icon. Interesting plant. Generous allowances. Some decent people.

Cons

Ex defence force personnel slowly taking over and with them comes the oppressive management style from the army. You have to wait for someone to die to get a job here. Boys club management styles.

Pros

Opportunities for a wide exposure to various parts of the business through 6monthly rotations, with preference for your interests. Great mix of on site and office based work, getting exposure to some of the most complex machines that exist in the country in a unique environment. Plenty of opportunities to gain knowledge from people with a ton of experience. (I have met engineers that have worked there for nearly 40 years) Great for development as you can work along side some very smart people. Most other employees are genuinely enthusiastic and willing to help you. Are also somewhat willing to assign you work that aligns with your interests. Competitive renumeration for grad roles. Great work-life balance 90% of the time. (There is no cultural expectation to grind unpaid overtime except in extreme circumstances)

Cons

HR/people services can be slow and difficult to deal with. Similarly, some workers can be “checked out” and not helpful / not great to work with. (A minority of people I have interacted with.) Somewhat inconsistent experience between teams as a grad. (Some are very willing to give you interesting, complex and impactful work, some require you to ask for it, some will give you grunt work) Somewhat “penny pinching” culture from management, i.e there are less non-work related “fun” events that are thrown when compared to other businesses in the industry. (May be related to Snowy being govt. owned) Also unwilling to give slightly higher raises due to inflation. The work culture is generally pretty good, such as providing a good work life balance and not setting unrealistic expectations for your work. Although, sometimes this can come out as lazy or unmotivated colleagues . (Dependant on teams)
