Management is awful

Pros

Good pay. Paid on time. Multiple office locations.

Cons

Too many managers are bullies or otherwise unfit for people management. No transparency. Managers can block transfers for no reason. Too great a power imbalance between management and their reports. Policy is not adhered to.

Pros

New building at 105 Phillip St is handy if you live in the West or can commute. Social culture and friendly colleagues

Cons

Education at a national policy level is a rarified level of policy formulation. Be on top of your game. Better still, be a teacher or have a lot of background knowledge, to thrive in this unforgiving role.

Pros

Flexible working hours , Ability to make a difference

Cons

In a very small town of 2,500 in north west NSW our indigenous staff were ineffective, allowed in due to their cultural expertise. Every time work came up to do with anyone in the town they'd passed in the street they couldn't because it was a conflict of interest, I thought this was the reason they came to work for the department without a degree.
