Is it just my agency, or is closing time at 5 PM actually just the start of Phase Two? I see my Slack icons stay green until 9 PM every single night, and if I log off at a normal hour, I feel an incredible amount of guilt. Nothing we do is so urgent that it requires a Tuesday night crisis meeting at 8 PM. How do we break the always on culture?

It’s all agencies. You need to decide whether you want to participate in it or not. That’s why I left the agency world. We’re not curing cancer. And if they let you go for not working ridiculous hours it wasn’t the right place for you!
Be the change you want to see. I stopped working late and low and behold, nothing bad happened. Just test it.. commit to going a few weeks with boundaries and you'll see how everything is fine, the work gets done and no one is mad at you.
I also think it depends on company. I manage an international team so it’s not unusual for me to be seen on online at strange hours, but you’re not gonna see me on at 9 AM.
